The Thai island of Koh Phi Phi Leh is portrayed as an idyllic, forgotten corner of South-East Asia in the Leonardo DiCaprio film, The Beach. While its natural beauty - complete with white beaches, lush tropical rainforest and crystal clear water - remains intact, it is now one of the country's most recognisable tourist destinations, populated by dozens of boats ferrying thousands of tourists each day. Stunning Maya Bay, which is sheltered by 100-metre-high rugged escarpments and portrayed as "the beach" in the film, has in recent years been swamped by tourism operators offering tours and attractions to capitalise on the film's notoriety. The film is based is on a book by novelist Alex Garland about a 20-something man who, armed with a strange map, goes on a mission of self-discovery in Thailand.
